He’s loved her since childhood; one fake date might finally make it real.

I was 15 years old when I stood on a hill in a peach orchard with the girl of my dreams, contemplating marriage.  
Now I’m a hockey star, The Maverick Murphy.
I have flow on the ice and on my head, but I still have trouble forming sentences when she’s around.
And she’s all around—living in my house, sharing my space, so close, I can smell her perfume on my clothes.
I’m all grown up, and I’d still do anything for her.

Now that boy is a grown man, a hockey star with muscles and dimples and smoldering hazel eyes.
He’s also my new roommate, but I’m not here to fall in love.
Our beloved peach trees are dying, and I’m here to find a cure.

When the town’s rich bully threatens to own our land and me along with it, I kind of snap. I kind of say Maverick’s mine for real.
It’s a lie. We’re only faking, but with every kiss, every touch, every stolen moment, reality starts to blur.
Still, as much as we want to pretend, he’s LA’s hockey champion, and when the semester ends, I’ll have to leave.
That’s reality.

Dove puts her hand on my other arm, giving June a pointed smile. “It’s really nice that you’re Mav’s biggest fan, but he’s not going anywhere with you.” 

Gina’s lips press tight, and she leans back in her chair, eyes flashing. I glance over at Dove and see she’s smiling, but she’s not joking.

Her pretty blue eyes are steely, and even though her smile is friendly and calm, I can tell she means business. 

June slides her hand off me, lifting her chin. “Sorry if I interrupted your family time. I didn’t mean to offend your sister.” 

“She’s not—” I start, but Dove interrupts me.

“I’m not his sister. I’m his friend.” 

I never knew the word friend could sound like a threat.

June’s eyes narrow, and she takes a beat before turning on her heel and stalking away. 

Air explodes through Gina’s lips, and she leans forward in Dove’s direction with her mouth open in a laugh. “Sweet little Dove is a badass. You’re my hero.”

My head tilts to the side, and I look over at her. “Not sure how I feel about that.” 

Does it mean I’ve been friend-zoned?

“I’m sorry, Maverick.” Her smile turns guilty, and she blinks up at me. “I shouldn’t have done that. I totally cock-blocked you, and

I had no right. You shouldn’t give up a potential love-connection for—”

“Hey.” It’s my turn to interrupt her. “I had zero interest in making that connection.”
