“I’d really like to see Cricket. I’ve missed her s “I’d really like to see Cricket. I’ve missed her so much.”

Jada doesn’t move at first. She studies the three of us again as if weighing her options. Another cry sounds from behind her, and I force a desperate smile.

“Please?” My tone seems to soften her, or the noise of a fussy baby.

Jada steps back, opening the door wider. “I guess y’all can come in.” She walks ahead of us, picking up discarded socks, a T-shirt, and a plastic bag. “It’s kind of a mess in here. I never had a baby before.”

My chest tightens at the sound of a baby girl humming in a fretful way from the floor across the room, then Cricket’s little head peeks out from behind a plush armchair.

Every muscle in my body tenses, and I hold myself back from racing across the small space to scoop her into my arms.

“Can I hold her? Please?” I don’t wait for an answer. I go to her before Jada replies, bending down to sweep her onto my hip. “Cricket?” My voice is soft and high. “Hey, baby! You okay?”

Her little eyes widen, and she pats my face, squealing and then leaning forward to put her forehead against my jaw as she chants, “Ba ba ba.”

“I know, baby girl. I missed you, too.” I close my heated eyes, swallowing the ache in my throat as I rub her back. “I’m here…”

My throat is dry, and I hug Cricket tighter. She puts her little head on my shoulder, humming quietly as she sucks on her finger, and I realize we have a problem. I’m not going to be able to leave here without her...

She looks up at me. “What are you doing with a bab She looks up at me. “What are you doing with a baby?”

“I have no idea.”

Her brow furrows, and she blinks from Cricket to me and back again. “She’s all wet.”

“Well, she rolled around in her poopy diaper.” I nod over my shoulder to the living room, and hiss. “Shit.”

“You can say that again.” Melody presses the back of her wrist under her nose. “Is it still in there?”

“Hold this.” I shove the towel-wrapped infant in her arms.

“Whooa! Oh, no…” Melody’s knees bend and she acts like she’s going to give the baby back.

I don’t have time for theatrics.

I run to the living room where sure enough, that crap-laden pamper is open with the contents smeared all around, including on my expensive Persian rug.

“Oh, f--k…” I bend forward, my throat tightening as I start to gag.

“Don’t do that!” Melody’s eyes are huge, and she’s holding the baby like she has a little more practice than I do. “If you barf, I’ll barf.”

I run to the kitchen, jerking open the cabinet that contains my trash. I hold onto the marble countertop, fighting the gagging sensation pulling at my throat.

The baby starts to cry, and I blink the moisture out of my eyes. I wipe the back of my hand over my forehead, looking over to where Melody still stands, Cricket’s back against her stomach.

“Congratulations,” I manage to say through the thickness in my throat. “You’re really going to see me fail this time. Front-row seat, in living color.”

“What?” She strides over to where I’m bracing myself over the trash can.

“Let me guess, the award for most careless ejaculation goes to me?” My tone drips with defeated sarcasm.

“No…” Melody shakes her head. “I-I don’t want that. You’re not going to fail, because I’m going to help you.”

Grabbing his hand, I drag him into my bedroom, sla Grabbing his hand, I drag him into my bedroom, slamming the door as I turn to face him.

His eyes are darkened, and we’re both panting like we’ve run a race. We’re just getting started. He watches me, as if he’s waiting for me to tell him this is okay, we can do this.

F--k me, this is the worst idea ever.

“No one can know,” I give a stern order.

His lips curl in that cocky smile that’s pure Knox. “You’re going to let me f--k you?”

“Shut up and take your clothes off before I change my mind.”

He reaches behind his neck and pulls the shirt over his head, leaving his hair a sexy mess, uncovering strong pecs, a solid six-pack, that mouthwatering V disappearing into his jeans.

I take a step back, sitting on the bed with a “Damn.”

He steps forward, putting his hands on my shoulders and pushing the cardigan down my arms. “Your turn.”

I exhale a little laugh. “I’m not…”

I wave my hand in front of his perfectly sculpted physique, and he catches it in his larger one, pulling it to his lips. “Shut up and let me f--k you.”

The brush of his warm lips against the inside of my palm registers straight to my tingling core.

I rub my thighs together, huffing a laugh. “We probably should work on how we speak to each other.”

Leaning down, he catches the hem of my shirt as he kisses the side of my face, my ear. “Are you implying we’re not nice?”

Cool air swirls around my body, tightening my nipples. My eyes close as he lifts my breast in his hand, pinching the sensitive bud.

“No… never be nice,” I gasp, and he wraps his arm around my waist, lifting me higher onto the bed as he joins me.

His head is at my chest, and he covers my nipple with his lips, biting gently before moving to the other. My head drops back, and my eyes close with a groan.

“I promise never to be nice when I f--k you.”
